Using Sustainable Return on Investment for Business Decision Making

Sustainable Return on Investment (SROI) SROI analysis accounts for full economic, social and environmental impacts, helping to optimize decisions while reducing negative ecological impacts. Costs are typically financial expenditures, while benefits may be largely non-financial and thus ignored in traditional financial analyses. Yet many benefits (energy saved, water conserved, improved safety or efficiency) can be converted into monetary terms and compared with financial impacts. SROI’s key feature is that it monetizes all of the social and environmental impacts related to a given project. However it’s important to note that an SROI analysis also provides the equivalent of traditional life cycle cost metrics which are called Financial Return on Investment (FROI). FROI accounts for internal cash costs and benefits only, while SROI accounts for all internal and external costs and benefits. SROI supplements traditional performance measures in order to integrate sustainability into current decision-making processes. SROI promotes sustainable investment strategies from an objective and transparent perspective that is linked to the triple bottom line of a project. This session will demonstrate how SROI has helped HDR and our clients prioritize actions and make key decisions.
